The 12th Canadian Brigade fared better on the left. They initially faced opposition from machine guns in the woods north-west of Beaucourt and from the northern edge of Beacourt Wood but overcame this with the help of tanks, a field battery and a 6-inch trench mortar. Six Mark V Stars from the centre company managed to reach the Blue Dotted Line, although because of the 11th Brigade being restricted in its advance by the stiff resistance, they were forced to withdraw some 1,500 yards with their machine-gun teams. On the left, though, four tanks got to the Blue Dotted Line south of Caux and held there. Lt F. M. Macdonald, a machine-gun officer, was in the first tank to arrive on the objective:
